We ride from verdant forests and flower-filled valleys to barren lunar landscapes with towering peaks and hanging glaciers. Weaving our way across the Indian Himalaya we get a taste of the rich Ladakhi culture and see monasteries majestically perched on high spurs. Running the trip in this direction entails more climbing overall, but offers the best opportunity to fully acclimatise and cycle the whole route. We slowly ascend a series of twenty one amazing hairpin bends, known as the Gata Loops, gaining only 400m in elevation over a distance of 9.4km. From the viewpoint at the top we stop to look back down the valley, filled with curious wind-eroded rock formations.
