BATTLEFIELDS 2017

The Holocaust Remembered The Moving Story of Anne Frank & Oscar Schindler The Holocaust was one of the darkest chapters in 20th century history, claiming at least six million victims. The stories connected with it are both shocking and heartrending, and at times, difficult to make sense of, acting as a warning for future generations; that it should never happen again. Day 1 Local departure by coach or Door-to-Door service, then to Holland for an overnight stay. Day 2 Anne Frank’s Story Today we uncover the story of Anne Frank and her family, seeing the outside of her house where she sheltered from the Gestapo and her memorial. We then visit Westerbork Concentration camp before continuing for an overnight stop in Hannover. B Day 3 Bergen-Belsen & Anne Frank’s Memorial At Bergen- Belsen we visit the Camp liberated by British troops in April 1945. Anne Frank died at Bergen-Belsen in 1945 and we see her memorial. Free time in Celle before proceeding to Berlin for three nights. B Day 4 Berlin & the Final Solution In Berlin we begin at the Holocaust Memorial then see the area that was the nerve-centre of the Third Reich, also the Topography of Terror exhibition. We also visit ‘Gleis 17’ in the Berlin suburbs where thousands of Jews were deported to Concentration Camps. At Wannsee we visit the conference centre where it is believed the decision to carry out the ‘Final Solution’ was made (entrance subject to modern day conferences not taking place). B Day 5 Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp We travel out to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp and later return to central Berlin for free time or you can join our optional tour of WWII military history sites. B Day 6 Wroclaw We travel into Poland and stop at Wroclaw. Once the German city of Breslau, it had a large Jewish population. Continue to Kraków for a three-night stay. B Day 7 The Oscar Schindler Story & Heroe’s Square In Kraków, we visit the Oscar Schindler Factory which is now a museum. We take a look at the site of the Kraków Ghetto and see Heroes Square. B Day 8 Auschwitz At Auschwitz we visit what has become one of the enduring symbols of the horror that was the Holocaust. We take a guided visit of Auschwitz before moving on to the vast site of Auschwitz-Birkenau, where an estimated one million died in the ‘Final Solution’. A sobering but memorable day, which brings together many of the Holocaust stories we follow on the tour. B Day 9 The Heydrich Story: Operation Anthropoid We travel to Prague and follow the story of Operation Anthropoid (now the subject of a Holywood movie): the assassination of SS leader Reinhard Heydrich in 1942. Overnight in Prague. B Day 10 Terezin This morning we travel to Terezin, once Theresienstadt. This town was turned into a Concentration Camp by the Nazis and used by them as a propaganda tool to give the impression that such camps were simply for detention. We stay tonight in Bavaria. B Day 11 Nuremberg We visit the Congress Hall which now houses a museum chronicling the rise and fall of the Nazis and linking it with the Holocaust story. We end our tour at the Nuremberg Courthouse where those who had orchestrated the Holocaust were tried after WWII; a fitting place to end our moving journey.
