Day 1 Local departure by coach, then to Peronne for a four-night stay at the 3-star Ibis Styles Peronne- Assevillers. Day 2 First day of the Somme We begin at Gommecourt, then see where the Northern Pals battalions fought at Serre, walking up to the Sheffield Memorial Park. Following lunch, we look at the Beaumont- Hamel battlefield, seeing the Sunken Lane and Hawthorn Ridge. We then examine the fighting for the Thiepval Ridge, visiting the Thiepval Visitors’ Centre and Thiepval Memorial. We end the day at the Leipzig Salient. B Day 3 la Boisselle & Mametz Today we begin in Mash Valley at Ovillers, then move to the Lochnagar Mine crater at La Boisselle, before seeing where regiments from Yorkshire fought at Fricourt. Later, we look at the story of Devonshire Trench at Mametz. We end the day looking at the fighting at Mametz Wood involving the 38th (Welsh) Division. B Day 4 delville Wood & albert Today we follow the course of the fighting at High Wood and Delville Wood, seeing ‘Crucifix Corner’ and Caterpillar Valley Cemetery. Lunchtime in Albert, with time to visit the Somme museum. In the afternoon, we visit Pozières, and seeing where tanks were used for the first time at Flers-Courcelette. We end the tour at the Butte de Warlencourt, now a memorial site, where the Somme battle came to a conclusion on 18th November 1916. B Day 5 Return home. The city is full of military re-enactors and you may also choose to visit the Mons Military Museum. B Sep 3 Bastogne Today we depart for the Ardennes and look at some of the locations connected with the Battle of the Bulge around Bastogne, a town very much at the heart of the 1944 offensive. We see the Mardasson Memorial and Bastogne War Museum and Easy Company positions in the woods near Bastogne. In the afternoon we see a German Panther tank at Houffalize and visit the British graves at Hotton War Cemetery. B Sep 4 Return home.
